Celtic Isles by Stephen Waterhouse

In this beautifully illustrated book, Celtic expert Joyce Denham explores the landscape, traditions and stories of the 'holy islands' - Aran, Iona and Lindisfarne - and encourages us to find an island refuge within ourselves, whatever our circumstances. Her hope is that readers will find in this book 'a special place of retreat and prayer'. Denham begins by examining the power of the sea and the fear it has invoked over the years before exploring the heritage of the islands in turn, through a combination of background information, stories about the islands and their saints, reflections, meditations and Celtic prayers (both traditional and new, including many written by Joyce). The book is illustrated throughout with stunning colour photography of the islands, evoking the wonder and mystery of these special places.
Joyce Denham is an experienced author of several books for children and adults, taking her inspiration from Celtic Christianity and the lives of the saints. Her lyrical style sings through in stories. Having had a career in teaching, Joyce now lives in Minneapolis and is the Associate Minister in Adult Education and Formation at her church.
