Ceramic Painter's Pattern Book by Rachel Byass
A richly illustrated source book for ceramic painters with designs specially selected from the Design Source Book series and a comprehensive Introduction and Technique section by Rachel Byass. Here, you will find borders, frames, motifs and patterns in many different styles. The pages are packed with classic florals, beautiful figures, cartoon animals, birds, fish, butterflies and ornamental letters, plus many more decorative designs. They have all been specially chosen to inspire ceramic painters and to help them develop their own ideas on plates, bowls, tiles, vases, frames and more. You do not have to be a skilled artist to use this book. Step-by-step photographs show how to transfer the designs on to bisque ware and how to add colour using simple brushtrokes. Firing instructions are not included, but there is guidance on materials and where finished painted pieces can be fired. There is also a gallery of finished pieces, including plates, bowls, a frame and a beautiful Art Deco dish.June 2007
Painting on greenware (unglazed pottery) is becoming more and more popular; where I live there are at least three studios where anybody can drop in, select an item, paint it and then get it glazed ready for a lifetime of useEven children are doing it - but there is always something daunting about a blank canvas of any kind, and nobody on had to give tuition to total beginners. Until this book...
Now you can learn all about painting greenware, and impress everybody else at the studio by your expert knowledge. Find out what brushes are best, learn how to transfer your design to a curved surface and discover what you need to bring with you apart from brushes and a design. It is surprising how little you really need to know, but even I who have done whole courses on this type of work learned several things I wasn't told in class - the hallmark of a good how to book. One whole project for a lovely vase is explained in illustrated detail, and then several other pieces are more briefly described but just knowing what order everything was done is illuminating. Most of the book is filled with line drawings from Search Press' Design Source Books, everything from mermaids to witches, alphabets, elephants, Christmas trees, angels, florals, ethnic and animals. As with the books themselves, you can use the designs without the publisher's permission unless you are mass producing and selling the work. Better to use the illustrations for inspiration perhaps like I do...another useful book that gets right to the point without making something simple to learn seem difficult.
