Challenging Behaviour: A Handbook by Steve Hardy

This user friendly and accessible resource emphasises the importance of respecting people using services, their families and carers. It aims to support those working in services, to empower service users and to improve the quality of care. The authors developed this material with every effort to adhere to the Charter that has been developed by the Challenging Behaviour - National Strategy Group. The approach is based on positive behavioural support, offering person-centred support, individualised interventions that are clearly based on a functional assessment, understanding the person's needs and the environment in which they live. Key to this training resource has been the inclusion of the perspectives from families and people with learning disabilities.
Steve Hardy is the training and consultancy manager at the estia Centre, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He has worked in mental health and challenging behaviour services for people with learning disabilities for 20 years and has widely published in these areas. He is also co-editor of the journal Advances in Mental Health and Learning disabilities. Theresa Joyce is a consultant clinical psychologist and leads the psychology service for adults with learning disabilities at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation trust, where she is also responsible for the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and for Safeguarding Adults. Theresa has extensive experience in developing and managing specialist services for people with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. She is one of the authors of Challenging Behaviour: A unified approach, which are the clinical and service guidelines published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, British psychological Society and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
