The Chapters of My Life by Phil Brock

The book deals with the different phases (chapters) of his life, living in Hull up to the age of seven, and then going with his mother and gran to live at Market Weighton until the war ended. He attended a high school up to the time when he was 'called up' and went into the army. This was followed by two years at college and emerging as a teacher. He served in four successive schools and for ten years as headmaster at his last school, taking early retirement at the age of fifty-three. Chris's friendship with him and his wife, Brenda, developed from that point. Chris's thirst for adventure emerged very quickly when he went with a friend across the Sahara Desert in a camper van. Later, he was appointed as captain of a luxury yacht. Meanwhile, Phil and his wife bought over an acre of land, and they planned the building of a bungalow, which was built on this extra land. Over the years, they were able to employ a number of people in the garden centre, and it was Rob who finally became the garden centre manager. Rob's wife, Vicky, also began working there and she started the floristry section.
Born in 1932, the author was only seven years old when the Second World War broke out, and the family went from Hull to live in Market Weighton, where he developed a love of the countryside which never left him. His father went into the army and spent the entire war in Aden. The remaining family lived with the Layton family and shared their home for over five years until the war ended. Back in Hull, he attended a high school, where the principle was 'there's the work, learn it!' His two years' service at eighteen was in the army. After a further two years at teacher training college, he worked successively in four different schools, being appointed as headmaster in the last school. After ten years as a head, the system changed, and he was able to take early retirement at fifty-three. Linked with this work, he was involved with the Scout Movement, giving much voluntary service. After buying just over an acre of land adjoining their garden, he and his wife started developing a garden centre.
