John DeFrancis (1911-2009), Emeritus Professor of Mandarin at the University of Hawaii, graduated from Yale in 1933 and moved to China to pursue his interests. He traveled almost 4,000 kilometers through Northwest China and Mongolia, over the Gobi Desert, and down the Yellow River in three years of study and travel, immersing himself in grassroots contact with the language and people. DeFrancis received his M.A. after returning to the United States.
