Characters Of Fitzrovia by Mike Pentelow
This remarkable book provides an irresistibly idiosyncratic portrait of London in miniature. From its marvellously illustrated pages leaps a collection of tender, comic, shocking, sometimes alarming vignettes, a rogues' gallery of characters past and present - the famous, infamous and unfamous - who have, over the last 400 years, made this bohemian corner of the city what it is.
'Fitzrovia, Soho north of Oxford Street, has been the home of prostitutes, writers, criminals, painters and elderly ladies with bohemian pastsAll memorably Chronicled in this enchanting book.' Sir John Mortimer; 'A witty, vivacious, picaresque romp through Fitzrovia's history, inhabited by debauchery, high minds, skulduggery and creativity.' Angela Neustatter
Mike Pentelow moved to Fitzrovia in the early 1970s. He has worked as a sports reporter and industrial correspondent. He is a member of the Management Committee of the Fitzrovia Association, and Joint World President of the 'Stand By Me' club. Marsha Rowe was a secretary in Fitzrovia, when she co-founded the feminist magazine Spare Rib in 1972. Born in Australia, she worked her passage on a ship to England in 1968. She is a freelance editor and writer, and lives in London.
