Charlie Chaplin and His Times by Kenneth S Lynn

In his widely praised biography of the cinema's greatest comic genius, Kenneth Lynn sets Chaplin's art, his public and private life and his controversial politics in the context of his times. Lynn's extensive research and critical acuity, coupled with his deep historical knowledge, have enabled him to produce a book that has been recognised as definitive and which brilliantly succeeds in separating the facts of his subject's life from Chaplin's own artful fiction and, in doing so, offers us a deeper understanding of both the bright and the dark side of this extraordinary man.
'Kenneth Lynn's account of this phenomenon makes a fascinating book' - John Mortimer, The Mail on Sunday 'Not the least merit of this revisionist Life is that it distinguishes between the often magnificent movies and the mean-spirited man who made them' - Alan Stanbrook, The Sunday Telegraph 'Lynn's treatment of Chaplin is sympathetic and tolerant through and the book is far above the level of the average showbiz biography' - Humphrey Carpenter, The Sunday Times 'Lynn's book balances the myriad complexities of Chaplin admirablyNeither indulgent nor awed, but both critically astute and with a deep understanding of social and cinematic history, it has a well-prosed fluency all of its own. This is, in every sense, a classic text' - Total Film 'This fascinating historical document is unquestionably the ultimate on one of cinema's most cherished stars' - Film Review
