A Children's Guide to Spring Wildflowers by Rebecca A Doty
This book will teach young explorers about 21 spring wildflowers common in eastern broad-leaf forests of the United States. Photographs and text will help children and their parents learn how to tell the difference between a trillium and a spring beauty. Read this book at home, or use it as a field guide on your next spring hike in the woods. Wildflowers included: skunk cabbage, liverleaf, bloodroot, rue anemone, Dutchman's breeches, squirrel corn, trout lily, mayapple, spring beauty, trillium, cut-leaved toothwort, blue cohosh, wild geranium, Virginia bluebells, wild blue phlox, Jack-in-the-pulpit, wild ginger, violets, wild columbine, squawroot, and garlic mustard. Fiddleheads and flowering trees are also discussed.
Rebecca Doty, Ph.D. is a mom of two young girls and an associate biology professor at a small college in Pennsylvania. She conducts research on invasive plants and teaches courses on plants and the environment. Her love of the outdoors comes from a childhood where her parents encouraged hiking, gardening, bird watching, and catching crayfish in a nearby creek. Her knowledge of spring wildflowers comes from the supportive professors she had at Binghamton University.
