A knowledge of just twelve clematis, one from each group, gives the key to knowing all 1,000. With this key the gardener can quickly choose what appeals and what suits the chosen planting area. There is also guidance on how to buy clematis and how to develop a clematis collection. Lists of the bestclematis are provided. As a medical man, the author has studied and researched clematis wilt. The cause is now clear, as are measures to avoid wilt. The book ends with an unambiguous guide to pronouncing clematis terms. AUTHOR Dr John Howells is past Chairman of the British Clematis Society and past-Editor of its journal The Clematis. As an international medicalauthority he has used this channel to acquaint himself with horticulturaland botanical institutions world-wide. He has produced over 30 books on scientific subjects, has written many articles for learned journals and has made a considerable contribution to international scientific literature. He cultivates his own garden on a windy, hill-top site in East Anglia.
