Summary

Chris Drury's art is inspired by the wild landscapes of the world. He creates art en route, frequently cairns and shelters, and creates objects later from material found along the way - baskets, or "bundles" of bone, wood, leaf, grass, feather or stone. This is a record of Drury's work.

Chris Drury by Chris Drury

Chris Drury creates art inspired by the wild landscapes of the world. He creates two kinds of work: firstly that made en route in beautiful locations, frequently cairns or shelters; secondly objects created later from materials found along the way - meticulously worked baskets, exquisitely formed "bundles" of bone, wood, leaf, grass, feather and stone. This book is a record of a highly inventive artist. Drury's work evokes the essence of each place he visits. In Ireland a delicately balanced cairn on rocks perched high above the sea is topped by the bone of a pilot whale found on the beach to become the essence of his feeling of that particular day, which was one of air and flying. Elsewhere in the book, the spray from a spectacular waterfall in Norway mixes with the smoke of a fire cairn; a 70-foot high vortex made of interlaced struts of hazel and willow sits delicately within the confines of a medieval castle. Kay Syrad's introduction analyzes Chris Drury's sculpture against the background of late 20th-century environmental art, drawing parallels with Zen Buddhism and giving insights into the motivations of the artist.
