Cities People Planet by Herbert Girardet
First published at the end of 2004, this book effectively anticipated current concerns about climate change. It most significantly outlined the central role of cities in contributing to energy consumption, as well as their future vulnerability, particularly with the onset of the current rate of sea-level rises.
"Girardet makes a pertinent argument that designing for reducing energy, waste and water consumption will make cities and villages more liveable" (Urban Design, Fall 2009)
"[Girardet] has produced a readable history of the development of cities, has described his conclusions and offered his solutions. He is exceptionally well read and his references are mostly other books, rather than articles." (International Journal of Ambient Energy, April 2009)
"This book deals with some of the hottest topics of our day … by an author with obvious authority on the subject." (Cities, People, Planet (UK))
