The first of a four-volume history of the City of London that aims to encompass the social and political dimensions, as well as the City's human aspect. It tells the story of the City's 19th-century ascent to its position as the world's leading international financial centre.

David Kynaston was born in the English town of Aldershot in 1951. Since 1973, he has worked as a professional historian and has published nineteen volumes, including The City of London, a four-volume history that has received critical praise, and WG's Birthday Party, an account of the Gentleman v. In July 1898, players competed at Lord's. He is the author of Austerity Britain, 1945-1951, Family Britain, 1951-1957, and Modernism Britain, 1957-1959, the first three books in the 'Stories of a New Jerusalem' trilogy, which covers the history of postwar Britain from 1945 to 1979. He is a visiting lecturer at Kingston University at the moment.
