The City of London by David Kynaston
The third volume in Kynaston's history of the City of London covers the period 1914-1945, years of fluctuating fortunes that began with the City at an all-time height, saw a spirited but vain inter-war attempt to return to the golden age, and ended with the Square Mile devastated by enemy bombing.David Kynaston was born in the English town of Aldershot in 1951. Since 1973, he has worked as a professional historian and has published nineteen volumes, including The City of London, a four-volume history that has received critical praise, and WG's Birthday Party, an account of the Gentleman v. In July 1898, players competed at Lord's. He is the author of Austerity Britain, 1945-1951, Family Britain, 1951-1957, and Modernism Britain, 1957-1959, the first three books in the 'Stories of a New Jerusalem' trilogy, which covers the history of postwar Britain from 1945 to 1979. He is a visiting lecturer at Kingston University at the moment.
