Stephen Bull wanted to escape the world of advertising, where he had a successful career. Unlike his boss, Peter Mayle, who headed for the sunshine of Provence, Bull made for Llanrwst in the rainy valley of Wales where, perversely, he thought he might have some luck opening a restaurant. Stephen Bull's first London restaurant was in Marylebone, where he brought top quality cooking to a wider audience. His habit was to 'break' a new area, then move on - whether to the Fulham Road, Clerkenwell or the West End. He also established the restaurant in the Wallace Collection on Manchester Square. He has since left the capital to live in Herefordshire.
