Watkins was born near Columbia, Tennessee, on June 26, 1839. With the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in Company H of the First Tennessee Infantry. Watkins was one of just seven men left in his regiment when it surrendered, out of a total of 120. Friends and family encouraged Sam to write down his memories. His recollections were first published as a newspaper serial in 1882, and they were quickly praised as a significant Civil War work.
