Rainer Martens, PhD, has always been active in sports. He has coached at the youth, high school, and university levels, as well as worked as a research scientist in the field of sport. He is the creator and president of Human Kinetics, as well as the founder and director of the American Sport Education Program, the country's largest coaching education program. Martens is an internationally famous sport psychologist who has produced over 80 scientific articles and 15 books, including Effective Coaching, the bestselling coaching book of all time, and Joy and Sadness in Children's Sports. Martens was a member of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana's faculty for 16 years after getting his PhD in Physical Education in 1968. He has also been a featured speaker at more than 100 conferences across the world and has done more than 150 seminars and clinics for coaches and athletes of all levels.

He has been acknowledged for his service to sport by the National Recreation and Park Association and elected into the National Association of Sport and Physical Education Hall of Fame. He is a past-president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. He has received Distinguished Alumni awards from Emporia State University in Kansas (where he obtained a bachelor's degree), the University of Montana (where he earned a master's degree), the University of Illinois, and Hutchinson High School. Martens is still active in sports, particularly senior softball. As his Daytona Beach team won the Senior National Championship in 2000, he was selected a First Team All-American.
