From the reviews: This is an up-to-date, comprehensive review of research into disorders of consciousness... The authors employ a good evidence-based approach to integrating several different aspects of this field into this book. ... For researchers ... this book is an up-to-date collection of information appropriate for those either already in or even just interested in the field of disorders of consciousness. (Scott D. Spritzer, Doody's Review Service, December, 2012)

Steven Laureys, MD, PhD, is the director of the Coma Science Group at the University Hospital and University of Liège's Neurology Department and Cyclotron Research Centre. He is a clinical professor and board-certified in neurology and palliative medicine at the Belgian National Foundation for Scientific Research. His research group investigates the neurological underpinnings of human consciousness (coma, anesthesia, hypnosis, and sleep). He evaluates the recovery of neurological impairment and neural plasticity in acquired brain injury (e.g., comatose, vegetative/unresponsive, minimally conscious, and locked-in syndromes) using multimodal neuroimaging (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and electrophysiological studies (electroencephalography coupled to electroencephalography). He is the chair of the World Federation of Neurology's Coma Applied Research Group and the European Academy of Neurology's Subcommittee on Consciousness Disorders.

The Cognitive Neuroscience Society Young Investigator Award, the William James Prize (Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness), and the European Academy of Sciences' Blaise Pascal Medal of Medicine have all been bestowed upon him. On the subject of consciousness disorders, he has produced four books and nearly 300 scholarly papers (H-index 65).
