Come Collect With Me by Baron Perlman
A mainstream collector's voice, a psychologist's eye on collecting and collectors, a university teacher's questioning, and an approachable style. Put those together and you have a recipe for a winning book, which contains exercises on style and connoisseurship with photographs of antiques from Perlman's collection that he analyzes, including the compromises made in their purchase. A collector maintains a delicate balancing act keeping research, the intellectual and passion in harmony. This book addresses all three and offers the collector tools to walk that tightrope. If you are a new collector just starting out, a long-time collector, or know someone who does, this is the book for you. Perlman offers Come Collect with Me to collectors of all stripes -- from bottle caps, to snow globes to high country Queen Anne -- but particularly to those who collect antiques, casually or seriously. The book explains, confirms, and illuminates questions collectors have about their collecting. It offers insights and lessons. Understand collecting and be a better collector. The book may save you money; it may cost you money. It may save a few marriages. The book should interest any collector's partner who wonders what species that partner truly belongs to. If grown children want to understand their parents' collecting, this is the place to begin. The book is all about collectors, and the world they inhabit - physically, psychologically, economically. Buy this book and enter the world of collectors.
Baron Perlman has been collecting American ornamental arts for a long time. After being bitten with the collecting bug as a child, he discovered that his childhood and adolescent obsessions with stamps, coins, comic books, and baseball cards had been replaced by an interest in American antiques. He was destined to amass wealth. Dr. Perlman worked as a clinical psychologist for 34 years, teaching and studying. His practical experience as a doctor performing psychotherapy, supervising others, and simply listening and attempting to make sense of things has prepared him well for his role as a collector.
Collecting is a human activity on par with anything Shakespeare ever wrote about. Perlman, who was born in Chicago, got his master's and PhD in clinical psychology from Lawrence University (Appleton, WI) and Michigan State University, respectively. He spent two years in the United States during a sabbatical from graduate school. Army, which included a stint in Vietnam.
He spent the majority of his professional life at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh's Department of Psychology and in a number of consulting roles. He is now enjoying his retirement. His passion for collecting and writing has resulted in a number of pieces that have been published in Maine Antique Digest. In addition, he writes a monthly piece for the Oshkosh Northwestern addressing local, state, and national issues, based on the interactions of three people in a bar (as Wisconsin as it gets).
Sandy, his wife of almost 50 years, joins him in the collection. They have two sons and three pets and have lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for a long time. Neither of their sons are as obsessed with collecting as their father is. (Of course, one son's airplane preoccupation is pricey to say the least.)
