The Commanding Heights by Daniel Yergin

Taking a worldwide perspective, including that of Britain (where the process began under Margaret Thatcher), Europe, the former USSR, China, Latin America and the USA, this is a study of the redefinition of the relationship between state and marketplace. This is the process known as privatization - a term which inadequately expresses the phenomenon's far-reaching changes. The authors set out to show how a revolution in ideas is transforming the world economy and to explain why it is happening, how it can go wrong, and what it will mean for the global economy at the dawn of the 21st century.

Daniel Yergin, the chairman of Cambridge Energy Research Associates and the Global Energy Expert for CNBC, is a well-known expert on energy, international politics, and economics. Dr. Yergin won the Pulitzer Prize for his number one bestseller The Prize: The Epic Search for Oil, Money, and Power, which was adapted into an eight-hour PBS/BBC series that was seen by 20 million Americans. The book has been translated into a total of 12 different languages. It also won the Eccles Award for best book for a general readership on an economic topic. The Wall Street Journal wrote of Dr. Yergin's subsequent book, Commanding Heights: The Struggle for the Global Economy, No one could ask for a clearer analysis of the world's political and economic fate since WWII.

Dr. Yergin headed the team that turned the book into a six-hour PBS/BBC documentary -- the major PBS television series on globalization. The series got three Emmy nominations, a CINE Golden Eagle Award, and the Gold World Medal for best documentary at the New York Festival. Other publications by Dr. Yergin include Shattered Peace, an award-winning chronicle of the Cold War's origins, Russia 2010 and What It Means for the World (co-authored with Thane Gustafson), and Energy Future: The Report of the Harvard Business School's Energy Project, which he edited with Robert Stobaugh.
