Companions on the Bethlehem Road by Rachel Boulding
Classic title attractively repackaged in a special hardback edition to mark BRFs centenary.
Church Times, November 2012 This paper's very own Rachel Boulding has produced Companions on the Bethlehem Road, which takes the reader from 1 December to 6 January (the eve of Advent Sunday to the Epiphany)Each day begins with a passage of scripture, taken from some part of the Church of England's Daily Lectionary, out of which comes a reflection, ending in a short prayer. Much unobtrusive use is made of poetry: indeed, I was surprised when I got to the index to see what a large number of authors I had read over the course of the book. There is material provided for groups, but I suspect that this book is more suited for individual use; busy clergy (and others used to the Daily Lectionary) might find this a useful supplement to feed their reading of scripture, during a time of year when reading anything at all can seem to be nigh on impossible. Rachel Boulding was Deputy Editor of the Church Times, having previously worked at Church House Publishing, where she helped to produce the Common Worship materials. Before her death in April 2017, she contributed regularly to BRF’s New Daylight Bible reading notes, and also wrote Celebrating the King James Version (BRF, 2010).
