Company of Rebels by Elizabeth Lord

In the small Essex village of Fobbing, a band of peasants, brought to breaking point by poverty and famine, is incited to revolt. Led by the blacksmith John Melle, and his best friend, Tom Baker, the peasants make their way to London to protest against the unjust poll taxes levied under the reign of Richard I. But the friendship between the two revolutionaries is shattered when one embarks on an affair with the other's wife - an act of deceit that has far-reaching repercussions, particularly when the revolt fails and the wronged man is sentenced to death for treason.
Lord, Elizabeth: - Elizabeth Lord was born in the East End of London but has lived in Essex most of her life. She has a son and two daughters. Ruth Rendell describes her as a natural storyteller.
