The Complete Book of Origami by Robert J Lang
Create nearly 40 striking paper figures with clear, step-by-step instructions and helpful diagrams. Features simple to advanced objects: cube, parrot, rabbit, seagull, cuckoo clock, rocket, mouse, elephant, violinist, Viking ship, and many more.Lang has been studying origami for over forty years and is now considered one of the world's foremost experts of the craft. He is known for his intricate and realistic patterns, and his portfolio contains some of the most difficult origami creations ever constructed. His work mixes elements of the Western school of mathematical origami design with an Eastern focus on line and shape to create models that are both distinctive, exquisite, and difficult to fold. They've been in shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, the Mingei Museum of World Folk Art in San Diego, and the Nippon Museum of Origami in Kaga, Japan, among others. Dr. Lang was the first Westerner to speak at the Nippon Origami Association's annual meeting in 1992, and he has since been a guest speaker at international origami conventions all around the world.
He gives talks about origami and its linkages to mathematics, physics, and technology, as well as workshops on both artistic techniques and industrial design uses of folding. Dr. Lang has been one of the few Western columnists for Origami Tanteidan Magazine, the newspaper of the Japan Origami Academic Society, and has presented several refereed technical articles on origami-math at mathematical and computer science professional gatherings. He's advised engineers on everything from airbag design to expandable space telescopes using origami techniques. He is the creator or co-author of twelve books on origami art and design, as well as numerous essays.
Dr. Lang grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and was born in Ohio. He worked as a physicist, engineer, and R&D manager before starting his current job as a full-time origami artist and consultant, during which time he produced or co-authored over 80 technical publications and 50 patents in semiconductor lasers, optics, and integrated optoelectronics. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and a member of the IEEE Photonics Society. From 2007 to 2010, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics. He received Caltech's highest accolade, the Distinguished Alumni Award, in 2009.
Dr. Lang lives in the town of Alamo, California.
