The Complete Care of Baby Animals by C E Spaulding
Lifesaving tips for anyone who wants to rescue or raise a motherless baby...Jackie Clay has been a homesteader and horseman for most of her life. She has spent much of her life off the grid, has reared and trained Morgan horses for decades, and rode bareback bronc in a few rodeos in her earlier years. Her family conducted multiple journeys with their horses to the Upper Green River area in Wyoming to explore the Bridger-Teton Wilderness, which formed the backdrop for her Jess Hazzard series of traditional western novels, while living in Montana's isolated mountains at 7,600 feet (1,000 feet above the Continental Divide) where they were snowed in for 5 months out of the year. She and her husband, Will, live on a 120-acre property in northern Minnesota, surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods, where they raise their own cattle, goats, chickens, turkeys, and, of course, horses. They live in a log cabin with a half-acre enclosed orchard and berry patch, as well as many huge gardens. She cans and dehydrates much of the food for the family, decreasing their reliance on store-bought foods to almost nothing.
She gives talks about homesteading, sustainable living, and other topics at fairs and festivals all throughout the country. Mary and Will also host workshops at their homestead for anybody interested in learning about homesteading. On their website, seedtreasures.com, they also sell open-pollinated and heirloom seeds. Jackie has contributed to a variety of publications, including The Western Horseman, Mother Earth News, Rural Heritage, and Country Woman.
She is a regular contributor to Backwoods Home Magazine, writing feature stories as well as her popular Ask Jackie column. Raising and Canning Your Own Food, Jackie Clay's Pantry Cookbook, Beginning Again, and Homesteading Simplified: Enjoying The Good Life Without Losing Your Mind are just a few of her publications. She enjoys spending time with her family, listening to wolves howl in the forests, riding and driving horses, and sitting on the front porch of their log home with Will.
