In 1951, he enrolled at RADA, where he met his mentor and lover Kenneth Halliwell. They worked on novels while living on the dole (and briefly in prison for defacing library books), however Orton's solowriting garnered him more acclaim. His openly gay lifestyle has made him a cultural legend. In 1967, Halliwell assassinated him.
