The Complete Potter's Handbook by Josie Warshaw
This accessible book provides a sound practical knowledge of the main ceramic methods, ideal for both the novice and the practicing potter wanting to extend their technique. Following an introduction on choosing and preparing clay and setting up a workshop, the first section gives advice on inspiration and design. Comprehensive technique chapters follow on hand-building, making and using moulds, throwing, glazing and decoration, and kilns and firing. Over 25 step-by-step projects are brought to life with finished examples of contemporary work. These include a printed plate, a porcelain bowl and an undulating vase.
Josie Warshaw trained in ceramics at Harrow School of Art. She then worked as a ceramics technician at Camberwell School of Art, and now teaches within Adult Education in London. Josie has had her own studio since 1983 from where she continues to make ceramic work for commission or exhibition. She was accepted on the Crafts Council's Selected Index of Makers in 1995, and her work is also represented at Contemporary Applied Arts in London.
