At the age of 17, Paul Hewitt was a Silver Medalist Flyweight Boxing Champion for New England States. Before beginning his physics studies, he worked as a cartoonist, sign painter, and uranium prospector. While teaching at City College of San Francisco, Hewitt wrote Conceptual Physics, which was originally published in 1971. He's also lectured at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Santa Cruz, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and, most recently, the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Hewitt is currently teaching at City College of San Francisco and The Exploratorium, San Francisco's science museum.
