In 1964, he got his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a second major in philosophy and a physics minor) and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Gonzaga University. In 1973, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy of science with a focus on philosophy of history from Saint Louis University. He began teaching at the University of San Diego in 1972, where he taught logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics among other subjects. He earned his J.D. in 1987.
He holds a law degree from the University of San Diego and is a member of the California Bar Association. He stopped teaching in 2008, but he keeps researching and writing, including A Brief Introduction to Logic. Music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing are among his passions. He is married to Dr. Linda Peterson, a philosophy professor at the University of San Diego who retired in 2015.
