Confessions of a Knife by Richard Selzer

Merging art and religion with science, these largely autobiographical essays delve deeply into the emotional territory of medicine commonly avoided by other writers. This collection, first published in 1979, utilises the physical body as a means to explore the human mind and soul. Never hesitant to admit his own frailties, Selzer draws readers a first-hand glimpse into the medical world.

Richard Selzer was a former Yale School of Medicine surgeon and lecturer. He published several collections of short stories, including Rituals of Surgery and Bringing the World in for Repairs, as well as an essay collection called Confessions of a Knife. A Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Magazine Award, a Pushcart Prize, and an American Medical Writers Award have all been bestowed upon him. He was a resident of New Haven, Connecticut.
