Coppola by Peter Cowie
This is the definitive portrait of Francis Coppola - the director of the Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, Rumble Fish, and One from the Heart, to name but a few of his films. His career brilliantly expresses the drive and invention of the American cinema. The Godfather put him, at the age of thirty-two, right at the top of the movie industry as a writer, director and producer. Yet he has also suffered setbacks; by 1982 he had won five Academy Awards and, at the same time, was over $20 million in debt.Peter Cowie brings fascinating details to light about the Coppola family, the creation of the Zoetrope film studio, and the establishment of Coppola's own vineyard. Coppola's working methods are explored, alongside perceptive and detailed accounts of the making of his films.
Peter Cowie began writing about the cinema at Cambridge University in 1960. He has since published more than twenty books, including critical biographies of Bergman, Welles and Coppola. In 1963 he founded the annual International Film Guide, which he edited for forty years. Cowie has also provided commentaries for several DVDs of classic films in the Criterion Collection. He has served on the jury at numerous festivals and is a member of the board of the European Film College. Cowie was International Publishing Director of Variety from 1993 to 2000, and now lives in Switzerland.
