Corey Birdsong is a lively young boy in search of freedom in the same country that made an economy of slavery. He and his family are owned by the Hart family of Kentucky. But, when Corey's father, Roland, flees to the North and Corey and his mother follow.

Sharon Dennis Wyeth is an award-winning children's and young adult author who was born and reared in Washington, D.C. She is familiar with the issues that modern families confront as a result of her childhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. and her employment as a family counselor at a daycare center in New York City after graduation. Wyeth was awarded an A.B. Harvard University awarded him an M.F.A. and honors in a combined discipline of sociology, psychology, and anthropology.
Hunter College awarded her a bachelor's degree in creative writing. A Cave Canem Fellowship for African American poets has been awarded to her. She has taught Creative Writing at Fordham University in New York City and is a rotating Associate Visiting Professor in the Graduate Department of Children's Literature at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. She is at ease with audiences of all ages as an skilled public speaker with a background in theater and speech coaching.
Wyeth has spoken at schools across the United States and abroad, inspiring kids to become ardent readers and courageous writers by sharing her work, writing process, and personal experience. Literacy, racial harmony, identity, poverty, contemporary families, bullying, resilience, African American history, American history, the pursuit for beauty, and the strength found in community are among the issues she explores.
