A Couple of Poor Polish-Speaking Romanians by Dorota Maslowska
A fast-paced road-trip on black ice, laced with dark, ironic humour, A Couple of Poor, Polish-Speaking Romanians illuminates the dangers of being different. 'The worst fucking thing is that the world wants to turn you into a grey rag, saluting in a line - Just like you. Cold-cuts man. I don't want to be like that.'
"This precocious, iconoclastic Polish literary phenomenon evocatively portrays globalized angst in late-capitalist societies" - Raymond Taras, Stanford University
At 24, Maslowska is the enfant terrible of the Polish literary scene. Her debut book Wojna polsko-ruska pod fl aga bialo-czerwona (White and Red) became a best-seller in Poland and won her several notable awards. Her second book, a rap-poem entitled Paw Krolowej (The Queen's Peacock/Puke) won her the NIKE, Poland's major literary award, in 2006. Later that year, she wrote her debut play A Couple of Poor, Polish-Speaking Romanians, which was first performed in Warsaw in Autumn 2006. A Couple of Poor, Polish-Speaking Romanians received its UK debut at Soho Theatre in February 2008.
