Course in Probability, A by Neil Weiss

This text is intended primarily for a first course in mathematical probability for students in mathematics, statistics, operations research, engineering, and computer science. It is also appropriate for mathematically oriented students in the physical and social sciences. Prerequisite material consists of basic set theory and a firm foundation in elementary calculus, including infinite series, partial differentiation, and multiple integration. Some exposure to rudimentary linear algebra (e.g., matrices and determinants) is also desirable. This text includes pedagogical techniques not often found in books at this level, in order to make the learning process smooth, efficient, and enjoyable.

Neil A., who passed away recently, was a pioneer in the field of Weiss earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from UCLA, he got a position as an assistant professor at Arizona State University (ASU), where he was eventually promoted to full professor. Dr. Weiss spent more than 30 years teaching statistics, probability, and mathematics at all levels, from freshman to advanced graduate. Dr. Weiss won the Dean's Quality Teaching Award from the ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in recognition of his teaching quality.

In the ASU School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, he was also a two-time runner-up for the Charles Wexler Teaching Prize. Because of Dr. Weiss' extensive expertise and experience, his texts are mathematically and statistically correct, as well as pedagogically sound. Dr. Weiss was the author of A Course in Probability (Addison-Wesley, 2006), in addition to other academic publications. He has also written or cowritten books in the fields of finite mathematics, statistics, and real analysis.

His texts are used all around the world because of their clarity, readability, and educational quality. Dr. Weiss was a forerunner in integrating statistical software into textbooks and the classroom, publishing the first such book, Introductory Statistics (AddisonWesley,1982). Neil Weiss' work has continued to inspire future statisticians and present statistics students since its original publication.
