At night, Cowboy Small eats at the chuck wagon, sings with his friends, and sleeps under the stars.Lois Lenski, who was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1893, is a well-known author and illustrator of children's books. Lenski visited each of the locations that became the topic of one of her books for her Regional America series. She conducted extensive study and spoke with children and adults in numerous locales in order to produce stories that portray the lives of the people who live there. Strawberry Girl, a story about life on a Florida farm, earned the Newbery Medal in 1946. In 1942, she was awarded a Newbery Honor for Indian Captive, a dramatized depiction of Mary Jemison's life. In 1974, Lenski passed away.
