He has always had a strong interest in astronomy and has been a regular contributor to BBC TV's monthly astronomy program, The Sky at Night, hosted by Sir Patrick Moore. In 2006, he returned to astrophysics research and received his PhD in 2007. He is the Chancellor of John Moores University and a patron of the Mercury Phoenix Trust and the British Bone Marrow Donor Association, among others.
