R.S. Thomas is Wales' most famous living writer. His uncompromising stance on issues concerning Welsh nationalism, as well as his eloquent verse have, over the forty-six years of his career, earned him international acclaim and a vital place in the hearts and minds of his compatriots.
Sandra Anstey was born in Newport and grew up on a farm in south Wales. She studied English Literature at Reading University and then moved to the University of Wales, Swansea, to research the writings of R. S. Thomas. She completed her PhD study in 1980. During the 1980s she taught English and was reviews editor of Poetry Wales (1980-1990). In 1989 she moved to Cardiff to take up a post in education. She has edited many resources for teachers, including 14 titles in the series of Reflections for the Classroom and a biannual newsletter, English in Wales (1989-1992, National Language Unit of Wales). Public appointments have included membership of the Literature Committee of the Arts Council of Wales, the Broadcasting Council of BBC Wales, the Council of the National Library of Wales, and the English-Language Publishing Grants Panel (Welsh Books Council).
