Crofting Years by Francis Thompson

In its short lifetime of 100 years, the crofting system of landholding has had profound effects upon Scotland. In this book, the author presents vivid descriptions of crofting life, past and present, in a deeply-researched social history.

Francis Thompson was born and grew up in Stornoway, and taught at Lews Castle College there. His interests have always been centred in the Highlands and Islands, but always in the context of Scotland as a nation with an identifiable and viable culture. His deeply held beliefs have involved him in Scottish national politics and the struggle to achieve full recognition of his beloved Gaelic language.
