Crown and Shamrock by Mary Kenny

Based on unique access to the Royal Archives in Windsor, and other historical material, as well as on personal memoir, Mary Kenny reveals some previously unappreciated aspects of the Crown and Shamrock, including Edward VII's exceptionally benign attitudes to Catholics, George V's obsessive worries about civil war between North and South, and how Ireland was constitutionally altered (and morally riven) by the Abdication Crisis of 1936. The author of Goodbye to Catholic Ireland, Mary Kenny also traces the parallel rise of Ireland's Alternative Monarchy, the Pope, and the ceremonial role of the Catholic church which all but replaced the ritual of discarded royalty.
Mary Kenny is a leading journalist, author and broadcaster, who has written for more than twenty-five publications over four decades, including the Irish Times, Irish Independent, the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph. She was born in Dublin, the youngest of four, and, after a period in France, became a reporter on the London Evening Standard. A founder-member of an Irish feminist movement in Dublin, she graduated with a degree iin French Studies at Birckbeck College, London University. In 1997 she published a social history of Ireland, Goodbye to Catholic Ireland. Her biography of William Joyce, ‘Lord Haw-Haw’ entitled Germany Calling, was universally acclaimed by critics. She has also written a study of Ireland’s relationship with the British monarchy Crown and Shamrock: Love and Hate between Ireland and the British Monarchy. She is married to the writer Richard West, has two sons and two granddaughters, and likes to think she lives between Ireland and England.
