For nearly 50 years, R.F.Symes, better known as Bob, was a prominent figure in British geology and mineralogy. He began working in the natural history department of the British Museum in 1957 and went on to receive a BSc in geology from Birkbeck College. Symes was mainly responsible for the Natural History Museum's acquisition of the first electron microprobes. Together with P. He found the minerals parkinsonite and mereheadite, thanks to G.Embrey.
In the year 2000, symesite, a pink oxychloride, was named after him. For his contributions to the Natural History Museum and mineralogy, he was also given the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. In 2016, R.F.Symes passed away.
