The law permitted the elder Dumas to take the child away from his mother at the time. Dumas fils was motivated by her anguish to write about sad female characters. He emphasized the moral aim of literature in practically all of his writings, and in his 1858 drama, Le fils Naturel (The Illegitimate Son), he advocated for the concept that if a man has an illegitimate kid, he owes it to the child to legitimize the child and marry the lady.

Dumas, fils, relocated to Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1844. He encountered Marie Duplessis, a young courtesan who inspired his romantic novel Camille (Le Dame aux Camillas).
