Dances with Sheep by Steve Weddell
"Dances with Sheep" is the story of author Steve Weddell's battle to overcome the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis and fulfil his ambition to become a vet. After travelling the world and having been a Greenpeace volunteer, Steve developed a keen interest in conservation. Back in the UK, a spell as a zoo-keeper convinced him that he really wanted to be a vet, but would his physical difficulties hold him back? Steve's vivid account of his time as a mature student at Liverpool Vet School is shot through with humour in the face of incredible difficulties. The rigours of small animal surgery and farm visits, palyed havoc with his inflamed arthritic joints, and the authorities at the university seemed at times not to care about the extra challenges he faced. Against all the odds, Steve won through in the end to gain his cherished degree. "Dances with Sheep" follows in the fine Herriot tradition of humour, with tales to warm the heart and dismay the vegetarian.
After leaving school, Steve Weddell worked in a financial company in Edinburgh. In 1991 he left to travel the world and he became a Greenpeace activist. He returned to the UK keen to work in conservation. Steve studied for an HND in Biological Sciences and spent six months as a keeper at Edinburgh Zoo. Eventually, Steve decided he really wanted to be a vet. After taking a degree in Zoology, he enrolled at Liverpool Vet School and graduated in 2004. Steve lives in West Sussex and this is his first book.
