Darker Than the Deepest Sea by Trevor Dann
When Nick Drake died in the autumn of 1974, he left behind a relatively small catalogue of work - three well-received but modest-selling albums. His influence, however, was profound, as countless artists over the following 30 years would discover this quiet genius of British folk. In DARKER THAN THE DEEPEST SEA, renowned producer and radio broadcaster Trevor Dann offers a unique and impressionistic look at the life, music and heritage of one of the UK's most enigmatic and enduring musical talents. Dann's book uses previously unseen University papers and many new interviews with people who knew him to tell in more detail than ever before the fascinating story of Drake's life - from his upbringing in the quintessential English village of Tanworth-in-Arden and his prep schools in Henley-in-Arden and Sandhurst, to the bed-sit that was the ugly reality of his romantic dream of Cambridge University and various London locations where he lived and recorded. He also covers the commercial resurrection Drake's work had enjoyed since his death (particularly in the past five years)
The former Head of Music Entertainment at the BBC and a producer of Live Aid, Trevor Dann has written for The Times, Q Magazine, Mojo and the Independent. He lives in Cambridge and is a DJ for Radio Cambridgeshire. This is his first book.
