Darkness by Iain Richmond
Lieutenant Jack Falco woke up, said goodbye to his wife and daughter, three hours later, his family and half the world's population was dead. When he couldn't put a bullet in his head, Falco did the next best thing, took a commission as captain and left for humanity's furthest boundary, Station Pluto.
Five years in a scout-class boat refitted for the long haul, and Falco escapes the horrors of earth only to find something worse waiting in the vast Oort Cloud, an ancient civilization with a history of violent expansion and humanity has unwittingly entered their territory.
From Kathmandu to San Francisco, Iain Richmond is a builder and designer of creative environments and one-of-a-kind furniture. Using discarded and reclaimed materials, he has collaborated with and learned from craftsmen all across the world. Iain has always dreamed of a life where he could follow his true love, from living on a 30' yacht in Juneau, Alaska, to building his own home board by board (paycheck by paycheck) on his tiny ranch in northern California. I like to write science fiction. Iain travels nations and towns that inspire fresh characters and enormous storyworlds when he leaves his 'writing cabin' on Lore Mountain: Nepal, Isle of Skye, SE Alaska, Malta, and Southern Utah are just a few of his favorite places.
He is passionate in living a low-impact lifestyle, wildlife, wildlands, and the dream of a perfect society populated with tolerant people. He still enjoys boxing (more of a punching bag these days), rugby (see punching bag), trekking, and gardening (wine or scotch in hand), but spending quiet moments with his ladyfriend (much better half) and Bernese Mountain Dog(s) remains at the top of his life-list. He still travels the world with his laptop in hand, making time to respond to reader emails and notes (Iain's Worldbuilders).
