David Batty by David Batty

David Batty is one of a dying breed of tigerish midfielders, better known for stopping the opposition than for creating much for his own side. Yet managers like Kevin Keegan, Glenn Hoddle, Tery Venables, Kenny Dalglish and David O'Leary have all seen him as a key part in their team strategy. In his autobiography, David batty, the son of a Leeds dustbinman, is unsurprisingly straight-talking and honest; but his story offers humour and great tales - such as the time he deliberately gave away a penalty while playing for Leeds because he was annoyed at the constant heckling he was recieving from his father!
David Batty made his league debut for Leeds United in 1987 at the age of 18, and went on to play 211 games for the club, winning the league championship in 1992, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in 1993. He helped Blackburn to the title in 1995 and then went to Newcastle United in 1996. In 1998 he moved back to Leeds. He has won 42 England caps since 1991.
