David's Copy by David Meltzer
One of the most respected poets of the Beat and San Francisco Renaissance periods, David Meltzer has kept alive interest in the interface between jazz and poetry that exploded in the 1950s. This new edition of selected poems includes previously unpublished material and serves as a map to this very prolific and interesting poet.David Meltzer, a poet affiliated with both the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance, was born in 1937. Don Allen's major anthology, The New American Poetry 1945-1960, includes him as well. Meltzer began performing on radio and television in New York in the late 1940s as a young prodigy. After a few years in Los Angeles, where he was part of Wallace Berman's Semina magazine's circle, Meltzer relocated to San Francisco in 1957, where he became acquainted with poets such as Allen Ginsberg, Robert Duncan, and Jack Spicer. Meltzer was a pioneer of jazz poetry readings and, with his wife Tina Meltzer and poet Clark Coolidge, established the psychedelic folk-rock band Serpent Power, which recorded for Vanguard Records in the late 1960s.
He continues to perform with Rockpile, a music and poetry magazine. Meltzer also authored ten pornographic novels in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the critically acclaimed Agency Trilogy, before returning to the genre in 1995 with Under. He has published a number of anthologies, including San Francisco Beat: Talking with the Poets (City Lights, 2001), which is a collection of interviews. He was also a long-time instructor at New College of California's poetics program.
David's Copy: The Collected Poems of David Meltzer was published by Penguin Books in 2005. He has been dubbed one of the greats of post-World War Two San Francisco poets and musicians by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
