Dead End Game by Christopher Newman
Acclaimed for his authentic Precinct novels, author Christopher Newman presents another thriller starring Detective Lieutenant Joe Dante and his partner, Jumbo Richardson, of the NYPD. As powerful as a nine-millimeter and as dramatic as the New York skyline, Dead End Game is a hard-hitting tale of life on the force-and death on the streets. When a major-league pitcher is found dead of an overdose just before the last game of the league playoffs, the first assumption is suicide. Joe Dante and Jumbo Richardson think otherwise. And their investigation reveals that behind the all-American game lies a world of dirty money and deceit-and a cast of suspects who don't hesitate to play hardball.Christopher Newman was born in San Francisco, California, and spent his senior year of college in Cali, Colombia, where he penned the first draft of his third published novel, Manana Man. He came to New York City at the age of 27 and worked as a trim carpenter in Manhattan for five years before writing his first Joe Dante novel, Mid-Town South, in 1985. His publisher persuaded him to make his protagonist into a series character once that game was a commercial success. Following that, eight more Joe Dante novels were published, all of which made various national best seller lists. The Mystery Writers of America nominated Mid-Town North, which was published in 1991, for an Edgar Allan Poe Award.
At the request of the estate, Newman finished Chains of Command, which had been left unfinished when best-selling author William Caunitz died in 1998. It was named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times in 1999.
