Debt of Honour by Jeremy James

From modest beginnings at the turn of the century, the ILPH has become the pre-eminent organization for protecting the welfare of this most noble creature. The story begins with the remarkable Ada Cole. After witnessing British horses being unloaded nearly dead from ships in Belgium, she lobbied MPs, raised money and public awareness of the dreadful state of the continental horse for slaughter trade. The ILPH are now involved in all aspects of equine welfare, from the rescue of the Lipizaners from war-torn Bosnia and the support of shocking programmes for draught horses in South America, to the supervision of standards of care for leisure horses the world over.
James, Jeremy: - Born in Kenya in 1949, educated at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester and University of Wales, Jeremy James spent most of his early life working with horses and cattle in Africa and the Middle East. In 1987, he wrote his first book, Saddletramp which described his journey on horseback from Turkey to Wales. In 1990 he rode on horseback through the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and wrote Vagabond. In the early 1990s he was Turkish correspondent for several broadsheets and magazines, and in 1992 was commissioned by the International League for the Protection of Horses to write their story Debt of Honour. This work initially involved his dealing with Lipizzaner horses in the Balkan conflict and his subsequent management of Hergela Vucijak - the Bosnian State Stud. During the late 1990s he worked as Senior Consultant for the ILPH on the campaign opposed to the long distance transport of live horses for slaughter, which brought him into contact with many of the disappearing horse breeds of Eurasia. Jeremy lives in Shropshire where he now writes full-time for a living.
