The Decline, Revival and Fall of the British Empire by John Gallagher

Through his teaching in the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, Jack Gallagher was a major influence on a generation of students of empire. His re-interpretation of the nature of British imperialism, most notably in Africa and the Victorians (written with Ronald Robinson) stimulated much debate. His pupil and colleague Anil Seal has edited for this volume a group of Professor Gallagher's major essays: the unpublished Ford Lectures on the British Empire, and related papers on Africa, India and imperialism. The collection will be welcomed by all concerned with the history of empire throughout what Gallagher saw as its decline, its subsequent rise and its eventual administrative fall.

John Gallagher is a veteran journalist and author whose most recent book, Reimagining Detroit: Possibilities for Rebuilding an American City (Wayne State University Press, 2010), was selected one of the finest social and political books of the year by the Huffington Post. He began covering urban and economic reconstruction efforts in Detroit and Michigan for the Detroit Free Press in 1987, a position he currently holds. Great Architecture of Michigan is one of his other publications, as is AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture, which he co-authored. John and his wife, Sheu-Jane, live on the east bank of the Detroit River.
