Democratizing Critique by Kurt C M Mertel

This book advances current debates in social and political philosophy by providing the first comprehensive, critical engagement with the work of James Bohman.

Inspired by his theoretical pluralism and his efforts to bridge philosophical traditions, it includes contributions to hermeneutics, critical theory, deliberative democracy, pragmatism, feminism, and republican cosmopolitanism. A unique contribution to current philosophical debates, Democratizing Critique challenges theoretical isolation by extending Bohman’s wide-ranging reflections to pressing contemporary issues such as artificial intelligence, digitalization, and transnational and feminist politics.

It will therefore appeal to scholars of social theory, political theory and social and political philosophy with interests in critical theory and questions of democracy and democratization.

Kurt C. M. Mertel is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the American University of Sharjah and founding editor of the book series Insubordination(s). He is the author of Re-Thinking the Sociality of the Self: The Emancipatory Project of Being and Time, Volume 1.

Just Serrano-Zamora is a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of Barcelona. He has published on democratic theory, political epistemology, and social and political philosophy in journals including Contemporary Political Theory, Journal of Social Philosophy, and Constellations. He is the author of Democratization and Struggles Against Injustice (2021).

Gianfranco Casuso is Professor of Philosophy at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, where he also directs the Critical Theory Research Group. He received his PhD in Philosophy from Goethe University Frankfurt. He is an associate member of the research centre “Structural Change of Property,” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and based at the Universities of Jena and Erfurt, Germany.
