She began a series based on her own past when she and her artist husband returned to the farm that had been in her family for a century. The first novel, Bootlegger's Daughter, was a Washington Post bestseller that won all of the major mystery honors for the year, including the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards for Best Novel, and was named one of the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association's 100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century. Maron was honored with the North Carolina Award for Literary in 2008, the state's highest civilian honor.
