Chen Pingyuan is one of the leading scholars of modern Chinese literature, known particularly for his work on wuxia, a popular and influential genre of historical martial arts fiction still celebrated around the world today. This work, presented here in English translation for the first time, is considered to be the seminal work on the evolution, aesthetics and politics of the modern Chinese wuxia novel in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, tracing the resurgence of interest in classical chivalric tales in China.Pingyuan Chen is a professor at Peking University in China, and the Chinese Ministry of Education has named him a Changjiang Scholar, as well as the recipient of a number of national prizes for his excellent research achievements in modern Chinese literature, particularly modern Chinese fiction. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of London, the French Academy of Oriental Languages and Culture, Tokyo University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, among others.
